サングラスブランドのOWL MILSさんとは、東京のイベントで会ったり、福井のイベントで会ったりしながら、同じイベントに出店するものづくりの仲間として関係を作っていくことができました。OWL MILSさんは福井県鯖江市に本拠地を構えます。鯖江市は国内シェア約9割を占め、世界でも有数の眼鏡産地です。100年以上の歴史を持ち、世界最高品質の軽量で壊れにくいメガネ／サングラスを生み出しています。

そのOWL MILSさんに、TANNUKIの別注サングラスを制作してもらうことができました。鯖江産の高品質な偏光／ハイコントラストレンズ、こちらも国産でランニング時にも高いフィット感を生み出すフレーム形状、そして特にTANNUKIからリクエストさせていただいたティアドロップ型のデザイン。この3要素が合わさった、これまでにないサングラスが出来上がりました。

＞フレーム
通常のOWL MILSのフレームは海外生産がメインとのことですが、今回の別注モデルは西日本エリアで製作されています。国産のレンズと合わせて、純国産サングラスとなっています。こちらのフレームが作られている様子を写真でいただいていますので、ここで紹介いたします。オリジナルのティアドロップの感じが、金型からもよくわかります。

フレームはTR（熱可塑性樹脂）製となっています。TRは柔軟性が高く、その軽量性に対して高い耐久性を持ちます。高温や化学物質への耐性も高く、アクティブな用途に特に適している素材です。さらには、しなやかで適度な復元性を持ち、手でフィット感の調整がしやすい素材です。同様に調整可能なノーズパッド（ラバー素材を採用し、発汗時でもズレにくい設計に仕上げられています）と組み合わせることで、激しい動きにも動じない、ランニングにも適した高いフィット性能を発揮します。

＞レンズ
OWL MILSで最も支持されているポイントの一つが、最高品質の鯖江産レンズになります。その特徴は【偏光レンズ】と【ハイコントラストレンズ】の二つの要素を併せ持つこと。“偏光レンズ”は、アスファルトからの照り返し、水面のギラつきや乱反射を抑え、余分な光をカットして、眩しさを軽減するという非常に優れた特徴を持つレンズです。一方の“ハイコントラストレンズ”は、レンズカラーに応じた機能性により、特定の波長（色）をカットすることで色彩のコントラストを高め、より鮮明で視界がくっきり見えるレンズです。この2種類のレンズを融合させることで、明るさを残しつつ、眩しさをカットするレンズとなり、朝から夕方、曇りや雪の日など、全天候に対応し、クリアな視界を確保できるとのこと。ランニングをしながら、天気が変わっても、トンネルに入っても、ずっと掛け続けていられる、そんなレンズとなっています。なお、紫外線は99％カット、ブルーライトも約80％カットします。
また、材質も耐衝撃性において非常に優れたポリカーボネートを採用しています。もしトレイルなどで転倒してしまった際に、割れて鋭利な状態になってしまうことのない材質でできています（レンズに傷はついてしまいますが）。この辺りもランニングに使う際の安心感につながります。

＞デザイン
「掛けたらみんながタヌキになれる」、そんな言葉からデザインワークをスタートさせましたが、尖りすぎたティアドロップでは、似合う人とそうでない人がはっきりと出てしまう。OWL MILSのデザインチームの人たちとも議論を重ねて微調整を加え、しっかりとティアドロップ感を保ちつつ、多くの人にフィットする、とても良いデザインの仕上がりとなりました。実際にバイヤーやプレスの人たち向けの展示会に出品された際も、今まで苦手にしていたが、このティアドロップデザインなら掛けてみたいという声を本当に多く聞くことができました。

We’ve built a relationship with the sunglasses brand OWL MILS as fellow artisans exhibiting at the same events—meeting in places like Tokyo and Fukui. OWL MILS is based in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. Sabae accounts for approximately 90% of Japan's domestic market share and is one of the world's leading eyewear production hubs. With a history spanning over a century, the region produces some of the world's highest-quality eyewear.

We were able to collaborate with OWL MILS to create a custom pair of sunglasses for TANNUKI. The result is a unique pair of sunglasses combining three key elements: high-quality polarized, high-contrast lenses made in Sabae; a Japanese-made frame designed for a secure fit while running; and a teardrop-style design specifically requested by TANNUKI.

＞Frame
While OWL MILS typically manufactures its standard frames overseas, this custom model is produced in Japan. Combined with the Japanese-made lenses, this makes for a truly all-Japanese product. We have received photos showing the frame's production process, which we are sharing here; the mold clearly reveals the distinctive teardrop shape.

The frames are made of TR (thermoplastic resin). TR is highly flexible and offers exceptional durability relative to its light weight. It is resistant to high temperatures and chemicals, making it an ideal material for active use. Furthermore, its pliability and balanced elasticity make it easy to adjust the fit by hand. When paired with adjustable nose pads—made of rubber and designed to prevent slipping even when sweating—the frames deliver a secure fit that remains stable during intense movement, making them perfect for running.

＞Lenses
One of the features that makes OWL MILS so popular is its top-quality lenses produced in Sabae. They are characterized by a combination of two key elements: polarization and high-contrast technology. "Polarized lenses" are exceptional for their ability to suppress glare and scattered light—such as reflections from asphalt or the water's surface—thereby cutting out excess light and reducing overall brightness. "High-contrast lenses," on the other hand, utilize specific tint properties to filter out certain wavelengths (colors), enhancing color contrast and providing a sharper, clearer view. By fusing these two technologies, the resulting lens cuts glare while maintaining brightness, ensuring clear visibility across all weather conditions—from morning to evening, and even on cloudy or snowy days. They are designed to be worn continuously while running, regardless of changing weather or entering tunnels. Additionally, they block 99% of UV rays and approximately 80% of blue light.
The lenses are made from polycarbonate, a material renowned for its superior impact resistance. Should a fall occur—such as on a trail—the material is designed not to shatter into sharp, dangerous fragments (though the lens surface may still sustain scratches). This durability contributes to a sense of security when using them for running.

＞Design
The design process began with the concept: "Anyone can look like a *tanuki* (Japanese raccoon dog) when wearing them." However, an overly aggressive teardrop shape tends to suit only a limited number of people. After discussions and fine-tuning with the OWL MILS design team, the result was a superb design that retains the classic teardrop aesthetic while fitting a wide range of face shapes. When showcased at exhibitions for buyers and the press, many people who previously avoided teardrop styles remarked that they would actually like to wear this particular design.
